Multi-homed Agents and different OpsMgr Management Group versions

Some environments use Multi-homed Agents. These OpsMgr Agents report to more than one Management Group. An OpsMgr Agent can report to a maximum of four different Management Groups.

Suppose you have an environment with multiple Management Groups and are using Multi-homed Agents. When the upgrade to R2 is started, there is a change these Agents will be of an older version than one or more of the Management Groups they have to report to.

So will these Agents be able to communicate with the upgraded Management Group(s) or not? To answer this question Microsoft has released an easy to understand graphical representation of the possible mixes and whether or not it will work:
